Learn to Create Your Own Copper or Brass Bowl

A Hands-on Introduction to the Art of Metalsmithing at Spoke & Dagger Co.

Sunday, March 24th at 3pm to about 7pm

Instructed by Artist Mark Masters

We need some creativity to get us through this Buffalo winter. For our next creative winter workshop series class, we are stoked to be working with a customer, turned regular, turned good friend, Mark Masters.

Learn traditional Metalsmithing techniques in this hands-on workshop. You'll learn about the properties of copper and brass as you work through the process of forming your own bowl, jewelry dish, ash tray, incense burner. Techniques include planishing, annealing with a torch, sinking copper into a metal form, sanding and polishing, patination, and waxing finish. This is the perfect course to swing some hammers, use a torch, hang out with some new friends and just turn your day to day thoughts off and get creative. Head home with your own custom piece!

About the Artist: We met Mark, a familiar neighborhood face, when he came by Spoke & Dagger Co with a cool Harley denim jacket and an unreal leather vest for us to resell. We got chatting and quickly learned our interests collided. Mark pops in regularly for coffee where we always find ourselves talking jewelry or hand made crafts. I am a silver cuff up my whole arm, turquoise rings on every finger kind of girl so when he shared with me he curates, collects and sells traditional silver jewelry pieces, in addition of his metalsmithing craft, I was even more intrigued. We will be selling some of his finds in our shop starting mid March and you can check out his latest treasures on his etsy shop < click here to check it out.

Jump to Mark's interest in metalsmithing, he had a passion for industrial art since a teenager. As an adult he dove into classes to learn the trade of metalsmithing while being a dad and driving trucks for the steel industry for 30 years. Metalsmithing, Chasing and Repousee, and even Tool Making are areas Mark honed in on his skills. He had taught many classes at the Roycroft Campus: Copper Earrings & Pendants, an Intro to Metalsmithing and even an advanced course. Mark's favorite part of teaching workshops is watching the students get creative. It's very cool to witness when you provide everyone with the same instructions and every single bowl looks different and unique to each persons creative process!
